Me, on a tree chair

Alger Island is located in Fourth Lake, and is a New York State campground. As it is an Island, it is accessible by water only. The campground is open from mid-May to Labor Day, and by registration and permit.  The Fourth Lake Day-Use Area is just a quarter of a mile away, and is the headquarters for Alger Island.

My lean-to on Alger Island

There are 15 lean-to sites with a fireplace, hibachi, and picnic table.  There is also a picnic area and dock for day visitors, and a hiking trail around the island.

Sunset on the snow-dusted hills, looking east from Alger Island

In late November of 2005, I stayed on Alger Island with some friends.  Since the campground was closed, no fee or permit were needed, and we had the island to ourselves.  In November there is little or no boat traffic, so it can be peaceful, and the mountains look great with a dusting of snow on them.

No one's impressed by "indoorsy types!"
