Marcy Dam |
Standing a lofty 5,344 feet above sea level, Mt. Marcy is the highest
peak in the state of New York. My friend, Tom, and I scaled Marcy on October 28th, 2006. We took the Van
Hoevenberg Trail, the shortest approach to the summit. At 2 miles we reached Marcy Dam, a small lake surrounded
by mountains on all sides.

Cairn on lower shoulder |
From there on, it's all sweat and uphill tenacity.
Once above the tree line, we scaled the rock face leading up to the summit. After the long 7 miles are over, you are
rewarded with a panorama of mountain vistas.
The 14 mile round trip trek takes most of the day, and tests your stamina,
desire and conditioning, but the spectacular views are well worth it.
