Paul, snowshoeing across Chub Pond |
In February of 2005, Paul, my brother-in-law, and I took the
4.5 mile trek to Chub Pond. The trailhead for Chub Pond is located at the end of Bear Creek Road, off of Route
28 in Woodgate. At half a mile, we came to a junction and headed south down an old logging road which turned into a
foot trail. Our packs were heavy and included snowshoes. It was a beautiful sunny day, escpecially for
February, and the temperature was in the 40's.

Our trek across Chub Pond, the lean-to in the distance |
At 3 miles we saw an opening through the trees, we were pretty
exhausted and had hoped it was Chub Pond. When we got closer and saw how small it was, we checked our map and realized
it was Buck Pond.
A grueling 1.5 miles later, we reached the lean-to on the
north shore.

Camp, just before sunset |
We took off our packs, ate a snack, and relaxed in the sun.
Rejuvenated, we strapped on our snowshoes and set out across the pond to the south shore. Once the tent was up, we explored
the area, gathered wood, and prepared dinner. With the sun setting, we started a fire and drank wine late into the night.
We woke up to a cold morning, 7 degrees. After hot chocolate and breakfast, we geared up and hiked out.
